CITY of York Council has cut the number of homeless families forced to endure a stay in bed-and-breakfast accommodation.
According to the latest annual survey, 41 householders were staying in B&Bs or hotels at the end of March this year.
The figure is down from 68 at the same date in 2001 - when the council was named by ministers as having one of the worst records outside London. It suggests a joint campaign by the Government and council bosses to limit the number of families placed in temporary accommodation is paying off.
