HIGHWAYS chiefs in North Yorkshire have announced plans to pursue a civil action against a farmer cautioned for his part in an illegal campaign to stop a ban on fox-hunting.

Spray-painted slogans highlighting opposition to a ban have appeared on road signs across the county in recent months.

The cost of cleaning up signs across the region is estimated to run into thousands of pounds.

Peter Teasdale, of Pockley, near Kirkbymoorside, was cautioned by Crown Prosecutors this week after he was accused of damaging six signs around Nawton and Helmsley on May 31 and further signs around Dishforth between May 31 and June 8. He was also accused of possessing four tins of spray paint and a stencil of "Hands Off Hunting" with the intent to cause damage to property belonging to North Yorkshire County Council.

David Bowe, from the council's highways department, said a civil action would be launched against Mr Teasdale.
