REFRAMING The City, a workshop exhibition of children's photography at Impressions Gallery, explores innovative, fresh and colourful ways of looking at York through the eyes of 12 to 16 year olds.

As part of Impressions' education programme, this show by seven youngsters is the outcome of a week-long photography workshop, funded and run by City of York Council and hosted by Leeds artist Benedict Phillips, with help from York artist James Rose.

Drawing inspiration from this summer's Slow Glass exhibition - Naoya Hatakeyama's rain-refracted studies of Milton Keynes - the children were encouraged to focus on the acts of looking and seeing, to explore diverse ways of viewing life through a camera lens.

After tuition in the basics of photography, the group ventured into York to "rediscover and capture its sites in new and interesting ways, with a new-found sense of adventure and enthusiasm".

The children experimented with different coloured and shaped objects to distort and change images of York, and the resulting show reflects their sense of play, learning and fun.

Reframing The City is on show at Chilli's Caf Bar, Impressions, Castlegate, York, from September 10 to 28, preceded by the official opening from 5pm to 7pm next Monday. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily, except Sunday, and admission is free.
