AS THE Minster bell tolled, they stood in silence.

Hundreds gathered at York's historic cathedral to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks on America.

The scene was one replicated in homes, shops and offices across York, North and East Yorkshire as tribute was paid to the 3,027 victims of terrorism.

Scheduled to last for only one minute, voices were quiet at the Minster for nearer five as people silently reflected.

Outside, more than 60 people formed a human circle calling for "peace in our time for the sake of our children".

The circle, labelled a prayer for world peace, was organised by local peace campaigners.

Spokeswoman Elder said the human chain was meant to complement the service taking place inside the Minster.

Another campaigner, Hilde Lenoir, hoped enough people would turn up to create a human chain of people holding hands to encircle the Minster at 1.46pm, the precise moment a year ago that the first of the twin towers was hit.

"We are challenging the status quo to find more moderate means of resolving conflict for the sake of children, be they from York, New York, Iraq or Afghanistan."

At Marks & Spencer, staff lined up at the doors and stood to attention as the minute's silence began.

At other stores, including WH Smith and Woolworths, staff stopped taking transactions and observed the silence.

- The peace campaigners held a candlelit vigil at dusk at the Minster Inn.
