THE Gail Hepworth Journey Of Hope Fund: the name could not be more appropriate.

From the moment she was diagnosed with cancer, Gail determined to look ahead and move forward. She set out on her journey equipped with fortitude, love but above all, hope.

Gail's refusal to accept what others would have considered the inevitable saw her travel halfway across the world to receive specialised treatment.

In so doing, the mother of two won precious extra time with her family. How much was gained through the New York treatment and how much through her own indefatigable willpower, we shall never know.

But we can be sure that her story inspired many, many people. That was seen from the remarkable appeal which raised the money for her US trip in less than three weeks.

Gail died in June. But her name and her spirit will live on in the fund which has been launched. Cash raised will go to medical groups in both the traditional and complementary fields.

Gail is far from alone on her journey of hope. Thousands of people take part in both the Race For Life and Stride For Life fundraising appeals.

Meanwhile, scientists in York are striving to vanquish cancer. Tonight we reveal how a local team is studying the possible environmental causes of breast cancer.

Levels of cancer have significantly increased in recent years, which strongly implies our modern lifestyle is a contributory factor. Academics from both York St John College and the university will study the effect of man-made hazards such as pesticide and nuclear power on rates of the illness.

Ultimately this research will help planners to create healthier towns and cities.

Meanwhile, as we reported this time last week, other university experts have made a radical breakthrough in the battle against cervical cancer. The new technique, it is said, has huge potential.

Cancer is still the scourge of our age. But it can be overcome if we all follow Gail on her journey of hope.
