Mr Fletcher, who now works as director of learning services at Hull City Council was head of the school from 1993 to 2000.

At yesterday's event, head teacher Carey Chidwick congratulated pupils on achieving their best A-level results and their third best GCSE results.

She talked of the school's sporting achievements and congratulated former pupil Nick Thornicroft for joining the Yorkshire County Cricket squad.

She also talked of the rich and varied programme of extra-curricular activities in the school including debating, music and charity work.

She added: "None of this would be possible without the marvellous team of staff both teaching and support staff who all work together to try and make us world class. Without the wonderful children that you entrust to our care this would be just an empty building - it is our youngsters who breathe live into what we do."
