THE aroma of first-class cooking filled the streets of York today as the sixth annual York Festival of Food and Drink began.
Dozens of stalls filled Parliament Street with goods from the continent and the festival's tasting boulevard. In the festival food theatre, in St Sampson's Square, Julia Lister and Janet Houston, of Ladies In Pigs, began preparing a selection of meals using British pork and bacon.
Julia said: "It's a lot of fun to do something like this. The people that come are interested in food and are prepared to listen.
"It's set to be a wonderful event and we know thousands of people will enjoy the events on offer."
Visitors to today's festival will be able to see Countdown star Richard Whiteley receiving a cooking lesson from Farmhouse Kitchen's Grace Mulligan.
The festival sampling boulevard has also returned, with a specially-chosen selection of gourmet delights, including products from Walls, Stagg Chilli and Pete and Johnnies Smoothies.
A continental market featuring traders from across Europe also returns, featuring a selection of European cuisine, to include beers, fine wines, cheese and crepes.
