MORE than 100,000 rare books were on show in York today at an event billed as the biggest of its kind in the country.

The 2002 York National Book Fair at the city's Barbican Centre has over 200 exhibitors, and is a magnet for dealers and enthusiasts from across the UK, seeking volumes on their special interests, from railways to children's books.

The Canterbury Bookshop, a company which specialises in children's books, has in its display Songs For The Nursery, which when produced in 1844 contained the first publication of William Miller's famous rhyme about Wee Willie Winkie.

There are also items of interest from earlier times, such as a 13th century Psalter, hand written on vellum, displayed by Andrew Stewart, who specialises in medieval manuscripts.

The fair, which started yesterday, runs until 5pm today.
