A YORK school has won its race against time to raise £2,500 in pursuit of a bid to become a sports college.

And Evening Press readers played their part in Oaklands School's success.

A number of parents gave donations to the school in Acomb after reading of its desperate last-minute plea for help in last night's paper. We reported that the school had raised £47,500, but needed a total of £50,000 by 10am today.

The last-minute donations included a "very large" sum from one parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, said deputy head Gavin Cowley today. There was also a large contribution from RR Donnelley.

Cheques were still coming in right up to the deadline, he said.

"We are extremely grateful to everybody that has contributed," he said, also thanking the Evening Press for helping to publicise the appeal.

The school has now raised £50,000 enabling it to apply for sports college status, which would entitle it to a lump sum of £100,000 along with £123 per pupil a year.

Further bids for funding are being made to the New Opportunities Fund, City of York Council and for lottery funds to go ahead with a major expansion of facilities, including a climbing wall, dance studio, new changing facilities and fitness suite.
