AN injury-ravaged York RUFC Under-15s crashed out of the Yorkshire Cup when they lost 37-5 in the first round at Middlesbrough.

York kept in touch with the hosts for over 40 minutes with gritty performances from forwards Tom Bewick, Matt Turp and Chris Woolley, and backs Jack Buxton, Nathan Forrest and Matt Rowson.

An early second half injury to flanker Andrew Barker effectively reduced York to 14 players, and although Barker gamely stayed on the field, Middlesbrough pressed home their advantage to run in five tries in the last quarter.

York were on the defensive from the kick-off but but kept themselves in the match with a try on the stroke of half time. Turp broke on the blindside from a scrum 20 metres out and slipped a pass to winger Henry Appleton who scored York's only try.
