Acomb 'B' were the surprise winners in the opening matches of the York Conservative Clubs Carlsberg-Tetley Snooker League.

They defeated their 'A' team 5-2 thanks to wins by John Ashwell, Jeff Keen, Peter Lawson, Steve Rodgers (23 break) and Trevor Ventress.

Champions Heworth 'A' thrashed their 'B' team 6-1 with victories for Clive Whyte, Jason Milner, newcomer Kevan Gall, Richie Burdett, Keith Lawrence and Dave Taylor.

Despite being a player short Bootham 'A' came from a frame behind to beat their 'B' team 5-2. Ian Robinson took the opener, but the 'A' side took the next five frames through Brian Coulson, John Darley, Colin Robinson, Ken Taylor and Bary Rankin, who came from 30 behind to beat Tim Fillingham.

Arthur Peeden won the last frame to give Fulford 'A' a 4-3 success over their 'B' team. Richard Stroughair included a 24-break in his victory for the 'A' team.

Heworth came from two frames down to defeat Pulleyn's Playmates Slater Cup Pairs match against champions Bootham.

Heworth overcame the aggregate deficit as Brian Birch and Jamie Faircliff won the third frame by 77 points. Their team then won the next two frames on the black ball and the last frame to take the match 5-2.

Acomb also beat Fulford 5-2 after winning the first two frames comfortably.

Fulford hit back in the third, but Acomb's M Frank and T Newton enjoyed a big win in the fourth frame before Fulford took the next. B Fletcher and M Bowker settled the match with a 95-29 success in the last frame.
