A SUPERBLY worked opening goal set Volunteers on their way to a John Smith's Sunday League Challenge Trophy first round 3-1 victory at in-form Hounds.

James Bonarius' 40-yard cross-field pass found Colin Rayner who set Luke Bilham through on goal and he coolly slotted past the advancing Hounds goalkeeper Sanderson.

Joe Gaughan scored twice on his return to give the visitors a three-goal lead and Andy Cygan's goal late on proved to be little more than a consolation for Hounds.

Jones and Woodward both hit hat-tricks as Severus SC enjoyed a 10-2 win over Shipton, Myers scoring both Shipton goals.

Wigginton took a fourth-minute lead at Pocklington with Paul Pemberton penalty and Adam Wash made it 2-0 before the break. Walters added a third with Mike Murr scoring for Pocklington in their 3-1 defeat.

Derwent United proved too strong for fellow division two side The Mount with Wilford and Newsome both scoring twice in their 7-2 win.

In the Mecca Trophy, third division Haxby Lions were made to fight all the way when narrowly beating Black Swan, of division six 4-3. Ryan Foy scored twice for Haxby with Ellis netting twice for the visitors.

St Clements came from behind twice before overcoming Beeswing 5-4 thanks to a hat-trick from leading scorer Joe Smart and a couple of goals from Pete Dransfield. Burnholme SC won by the same score at Copmanthorpe, Risdill hitting the winner with five minutes remaining.

Lee Wiper scored three but still ended up on the losing side as Wilberfoss went down 5-4 at Nestl Flag for whom Ross and Kilbride scored two each.

Heworth squandered a two-goal half-time lead when going down 5-3 at home to The Plough, Marsham scoring all Heworth's goals.

A solid performance saw Burton Stone ease into the second round with a 6-0 win over Bootham Tavern, with the pick of the goals a 30-yard drive from veteran Geoff Bracewell. Lee Bartlett hit a hat-trick for Volunteer Reserves but it wasn't enough as they went down 4-3 at Black Bull.

Goals from Gregory, Kennelly and Ellwood saw Acomb Celtic take a 3-0 lead at Heslington. The home side rallied to pull two back through Condi and Charlton but couldn't find an equaliser.

Cross Keys progressed with a 5-0 win over Pickering LB, Len Chappel scoring twice. Cooper, Oxtoby and Ratcliffe were on the mark as Gipsy Moth won 3-0 at CPP.

Croad (3) and Abell (2) were on target as Hambleton defeated Hazelwoods 6-3.

Ten-man Boy & Barrel put up a brave fight at Wigginton Grasshoppers. Budden gave the home side the lead in the second half only for the visitors to equalise but goals by Tom Coates and Roberts sealed a 3-1 Grasshoppers victory.

The only league game played was in division three where Hemingbrough took a fourth minute lead through Ward. Jamie Rank levelled for Bridge Colts on the hour only for Wood to seal the points for Hemingbrough with a goal 15 minutes from time.
