STAFF at a York department store risked looking like right puddings after they came up with a sweet idea to raise cash for charity.

A group of employees at British Homes Stores at Monks Cross Shopping Park, decided to sit in the shop's front window with their feet in bowls of custard as part of the company's national campaign to raise £100,000 for Diabetes UK.

But it was also a battle of the sexes because while the men - Nick Perry, Geoff Locker, Steve Roundhill, Dave Hardy and Jorvik Kalkinski - stripped down to their shorts to submerge their feet in the sticky stuff for four hours, ladies Lyndi Jones and Emma North dunked their feet in foot spas and enjoyed some pampering.

Shoppers watching the spectacle helped to boost the sponsored staff's charity total by making donations. The event raised £386.

Emma Fannan, the store's administration manager, said: "It was just an idea that was put to me by a friend and we decided to run with it. It's certainly generated a lot of interest."
