AN INSPECTION of York Training Centre has put the City of York Council-run facility into the top third of providers in the country.

The Adult Learning Inspectorate has given York Training Centre an average score of 2.86 - where one is good and five is poor.

York Training Centre did particularly well in equal opportunities and its Job Centre Plus work where grade twos were awarded. The inspectors found the centre had a strong philosophy of social inclusion.

The centre also has a programme for pupils in Years Ten and 11 at school who can benefit from work-related learning and who can continue with work and training with York Training Centre and other providers and employers.

The ALI also noted that the Job Centre Plus programmes had good standards of training with a high level of people being helped into jobs.

The centre was also graded for business administration, sport and recreation and care and early years. It has over 200 young people involved in work-based learning in these occupations.

Training Centre manager Jane Granville said: "We are very pleased with our results which are some of the best produced by a provider in our area. We are particularly pleased as generally local authority providers have not done very well under these inspections but clearly City of York Council is an exception."
