NORTH Yorkshire drivers are being asked to take extra care ahead of the start of dark evenings and worsening weather conditions.
Almost 1,000 people were killed or seriously injured on the county's roads last year and 95 per cent were down to human error.
Insurance broker Peoples Choice said of the 926 accidents, 39 per cent occurred in wet, snowy or icy conditions.
The brokers are asking drivers to consider a number of factors before setting out on journeys such as whether they are tired, on medication or are over the alcohol limit.
David Pearce, the Peoples Choice chief executive, said: "Human error is the leading cause of accidents which is aggravated by poor driving conditions.
"Our claim statistics show that we have more accidents in the winter months with the poorer weather conditions and longer hours of darkness.
"We would encourage everyone to take good care of themselves as drivers in the same way they do their motor vehicles."
