GIRLS from Mount School in York are making a big point in the sport of fencing.

Helen Holloway, 15, has been selected to fence for Great Britain Under-17s in a major competition in Heideheim in Germany next month. She is currently third in the National Cadet rankings.

Other Mount fencers have qualified for the National Youth Championships to be held in Stoke early next year.

Abbi Matthews won the Under-14 epe event at Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Championships at Harrogate. Fellow pupil Anna Longaloux-Ball finished second, with Felicity Knowles third and they will join Matthews at Stoke in February.

Faye Pullen just missed out on the nationals by finishing sixth.

Matthews completed the regional double by winning the foil competition with Longaloux-Ball third. They also head to the foil nationals in January.

In the Under-12 foil, Geraldine Sherwin was fifth and Pullen eighth

Matthews has had an excellent season competing in the Leon Paul Junior Foil Series, a competition held at venues as far apart as Croydon and Durham. Having won four events outright and finished second in the remaining three events, she is unbeaten and will receive her award at the final event in Bath next month.

The Mount fencers are coached by Harrogate Fencing Club's Brian Matlass.
