SMART York teenagers can steer clear of unfashionable Mischief Night escapades by getting down to a city night club for an evening of funky fun.

Clifton Moor-based night spot Ikon has laid on a special event, dubbed Go Supanova At Ikon, for 14 to 17-year-olds on Monday - an evening which traditionally sees some young people causing a nuisance across the city with pre-Bonfire Night pranks.

Ikon's alternative night will feature DJ Matt Moriaty, of Love 2 Be Kissed - Leeds, and resident DJ Rob, who will be spinning a mix of commercial dance, funky house and R 'n' B.

Members of York's anti-crime alliance, Safer York Partnership, will be at the event to support the club's strong anti-drugs stance.

Manager Phil Hallam said: "When young people come to Ikon for a night out with friends and to let off steam - that is exactly what we want them to do. Parents often come under pressure from their kids to allow them to venture in to the night club scene and understandably feel cautious about allowing them to go, which can cause all sorts of friction.

"As a dad myself, I fully understand that it is about striking the right balance between allowing the freedom for fun and growing independence, while having confidence that the environment is safe and secure. Here at Ikon and Diva, we strive for our name to be readily associated with a drug-free zone which is both safe and fun."

Jane Mowat, director of the partnership, will be part of a team which will be at the club to dish out information highlighting the dangers of drugs and encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own safety.

She said: "Drugs are a problem everywhere and York is no exception. It is crucial to communicate the dangers and effects of drugs to the right people at the right time, so we will be there on Monday getting the message across - between bursts on the dance floor."

The event runs from 6.30pm until 9pm on Monday. Admission is £1 and all proceeds go to children's hospital charity, ECHO.
