ACTORS are no strangers to sacrifice when it comes to getting into character - but Terry Welsh's latest role left a lasting mark on his appearance.

The Tadcaster and District Operatic Society member threw himself into the role when he was chosen to play Doctor Grimwig in the society's production of Oliver! With a full handlebar moustache and sideburns, which took several weeks to grow, he was every bit the memorable family doctor.

But when the curtain came down on the final show Terry took centre stage with a sponsored shave of not just his facial hair - but his entire head. Terry said: "It's a great feeling to be able to help children, especially sick children and with Oliver! involving so many of them, I thought it appropriate to donate the money to a local children's cause."

The after-show party collection raised more than £200, which will be given to the Martin House Hospice for children and young people, in Boston Spa.

Ron Hunt, of Genesis Hair Design, in Tadcaster, donated his services free of charge for the fundraising stunt. Anyone who is interested in joining the operatic society should phone Jill Thompson on 01977 684178.
