JAMES Mason, a member of Fulford Golf Club has been awarded a £2,000 elite bursary by the Royal and Ancient to assist in his academic studies and further his development as a golfer.

He is one of only 14 players to gain this award - Richard Oddy (Lightcliffe) is the only other Yorkshire player - which is given to players who are potential internationals.

Mason, who is in his second year at Fulford, has been a regular Yorkshire county and York Union team player.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE won the latest fixture in the Flamborough and District Golf Alliance at Driffield.

Malton and Norton hold the lead after three fixtures with 606 - four ahead of Scarborough South Cliff.

Kirkbymoorside were led home at Driffield by Bernard Feaster and Terry Harper, who returned a marvellous score of 62. The pair were ably supported by Geoff Thornhill and Angus Macgregor, who came in with a 69, and Tony Raby and Mike Parkin, who returned a nett 70. They finished five strokes ahead of Bridlington and Malton & Norton.

Feaster and Harper won the top prize for the best individual card with their 62. Austin Birch and Peter Brown (Bridlington) were second with 65 and Dave Collett and Richard Jewell (Whitby) finished third with a 66, while Malton's Tony Wright and Martin Prest finished a shot behind for fourth place.

DAVID Burrows swept the board at Kilnwick Percy's matchplay competitions.

The 12-handicapper beat Kyle Masters (7) 6 and 5 in the Student/Junior event then defeated Peter Williamson (10) 4 and 2 in the singles.

Burrows then teamed up with Toby Gowthorpe (6) to edge out Williamson and Mark Gatenby (17) in the pairs, 2 and 1.

KP's Chris Smith had three shots lopped off his handicap after romping home in the club's latest Stableford competition.

He led the field home by 14 points after including a two at the 17th - figures which saw his handicap cut to 12. Martin Cropper had the only other two on the day at the ninth.
