Dave Grohl has to be a front-runner for the title of 2002's man of the year.
Not only did the amiable former Nirvana drummer get back behind the drumkit for one of the year's best rock albums, Queens Of The Stone Age's Songs For The Deaf, but here, his own band, Foo Fighters, have come up with another contender to that title. Oh, and while he's at it, Nirvana's posthumous greatest hits package is dominating the pre-Christmas album chart.
One By One is the Foo Fighters most consistent and mature album to date, harnessing Grohl's gift for nagging melodies with the band's background in hardcore rock.
Foo Fighters have come of age, and Grohl has truly escaped from the long shadow of Nirvana, with a set of raw-throated, big-hearted anthems.
The likes of All My Life, Times Like These and Overdrive sink their melodies subliminally into your brain, while the stark, solo track Tired is the best song Grohl has written to date.
