A GROUND-breaking project to convert a windmill into an astronomical observatory and sky science centre may have moved a step closer to reality.
Members of Selby District Council's planning committee, who were expected to reject the plans, deferred the decision to allow the applicant more time to fine tune the details.
Amateur astronomer John Rowland, has applied to convert a Grade II listed windmill into a £100,000 planet-gazing facility, on land between Appleton Roebuck and Bolton Percy.
If approved, he plans to open up the observatory to the public as well as university students, school and college groups and astronomical societies.
Planning officers recommended the application was refused because of insufficient design information and conservation issues. But several councillors said the plan was "unique" and should go ahead.
