The fancied section opposite the boats at Pollington provided all the frame positions in a generally patchy 80-peg second round of the Yorkshire Winter League on the Aire and Calder Canal.

Wibsey Angling Centre boss Colin Hardy led with a fine 13lb 1oz. Fishing maggot and caster at 11 metres he netted roach to 12 oz and perch to 8oz.

Close by was Kevin Weatherall (Castleford) who fished bronze maggot over hemp for an all-roach net of 12lb 13oz to edge out Paul Burton (Anglers World York) who alternated squatt and maggot for his mixed net of 12lb 9oz.

Others: Dave Pollitt (Hirst Tackle A) 10-0-0; Chris Elliott (Marsh Tackle) 9-14-0; Nick Sutton (Anglers World York) 9-12-0.

Teams: Hirst Tackle A 62; Anglers World York 59; Wibsey Angling Centre 57; Hirst Tackle B 43; Marsh Tackle and Armley Angling both 41.

League: Anglers World York 3; Hirst Tackle A 4; Wibsey Angling Centre 5; Armley Angling and Hirst Tackle B both 8.

Mitre Angling endured a hard contest on Cyprio Lake at Carpvale where the eponymous carp were few and far between.

Terry Carlton scored yet another win with a brace of bream plus a few roach for his 11lb 14oz.

One of the few carp caught provided Adele Wallis with most of her 8lb 4oz. Best of the rest were John Haw on 6lb and Pete Child with 5lb 8oz.

The opening round of the winter series at Raker Lakes provided a promising start with all of the 30 strong sell-out field on Horseshoe Lake catching.

Victory went to Dave Sherwood (Anglers Corner) who had 34lb 2oz of carp to 2lb on floating pole and maggot from peg 18. At the next peg youngster Gareth Sellars (Leeds Juniors) used the same ploy for another all carp bag of 24lb 10oz.

Others: Frank Johnson (Headingley Anglers) 16-13-0; Oliver Hewitt (JT Rogers) 14-12-0.

It was big fish or bust on a flood-affected Tadcaster Open on the River Wharfe at Smaws Ings.

Bernard Nevison (Glen) won with 14-4-0 thanks to a carp and a bream on feeder and worm from peg 69. Scott Lister (Big Waters) took second with 7-10-0 thanks to a large bream from peg 56.

Others: Paul Brown (Tadcaster) 6-0-0; Bob Barker (Tadcaster) 5-10-0.

Dynamite Dean Smith (MAP Elton) returned to the kind of form that propelled him to the top of the Kamasan charts early in the season topping Sunday's 53-entry on Maple Lake with 48lb 8oz.

Drawn on peg 57 he fished maggot tight to the island at 14 metres for carp to 4lb. Stef Armitage (Team Glum) might have raised a smile following his second-placed net of 33lb 14oz. Drawn on peg 47 he alternated maggot around 6 and 13 metre lines for fish to 3lb.

Others: Bert Poole (Oaks) 31-9-0; John McGarrell (MAP Elton) 30-0-0; Terry Kenney (Merlin Baits) 23-8-0; Andy May (Sensas Daves of Middlewich) 23-4-0.

Despite carrying two feet of flood water the 73-strong field enjoyed good sport in the Ripon Open on the Ure with good numbers of silver fish featuring.

Graham Skirrey (Turners Tackle) led from a peg on the bridging site. After taking an early chub on bomb and worm fished to the far side cover he switched to waggler and maggot down the middle for three more to finish on 15lb 2oz.

Alistair Atkinson (Ripon) was pegged on the diving board where he used stick and maggot for two chub, plus roach, dace and grayling for 10lb 2oz. Paul Wood (Airborough) filled third with his 9lb 12oz net from Foxtons field.

Stick and maggot again did the trick with a brace of chub, plus 4lb of dace falling for its charms.

Others: Robin Pickles (KL Tackle) 9-4-0; John Pickard (Leeds) 7-2-0; Graham Burnham (A1 Garage Doors) 6-12-0.
