MUSICIANS give back your guitars and put down your piano lids - electronic engineers at the University of York have created a sound of the future.
Members of the Musical Engineering Group have invented an instrument for the 21st century, which they have named the Augmented Staff, by employing a digital camera and special counters to make music.
Modern Mozarts can move the counters across a musical score where their positions are recognised by camera and translated into notes. Music technology experts specialise in all sorts of high-tech audio areas, from creating realistic three-dimensional sound, to 'audio archaeology' - creating the sounds of architectural scenes from the past for films.
The research group is also looking at using gloves, headsets and tactile models instead of keyboards to create a virtual environment for computer users.
Dr John Szymanski said: "Everything from microsurgery to rehabilitation of people with injuries could benefit from this work."
