THE King of York panto is being urged to honour the Queen after each of his seasonal performances.

Theatre Royal stalwart Berwick Kaler, the star and writer of the venue's festive highlight, has been asked to end each show with the National Anthem.

The patriotic tribute has been suggested by Yorkshire Tory MEP Robert Goodwill.

He said it would take him back to the days of his youth.

"As a child, I remember the orchestra playing the National Anthem at the end of the evening and I just thought that in this, the year of the Queen's Golden Jubilee, it might be an idea to revisit that tradition," said Mr Goodwill.

"I have written to Berwick asking him to reinstate it."

Berwick said today that this year's show, Babbies In The Wood, had its own anthem - which is very different to God Save The Queen. "From the informal feedback we have received, it seems our audiences are pleased with our current pantomime format, which includes our very own anthem, We're All Babbies.

"We would, however, be delighted to hear the views of other babbies and bairns on this topic.

"The theatre is delighted that Mr Goodwill has always shown such support for our pantomime."

This year's show starts on December 11.
