AMERICAN acoustic trio Nickel Creek are young, talented and hot - their latest album, This Side, debuted at number two in the Country Album charts.
Multi-instrumentalist Chris Thile and siblings Sean (guitar) and Sara Watkins (fiddle) spice up their bluegrass with ambitious melodies plus virtuosity and variety. They obviously enjoy mixing various musical influences, including jazz, pop and classical, with traditional bluegrass.
This Side opens with Chris's clever instrumental Smoothie Song followed by the Beatles-inspired Spit On A Stranger. The bluesy I Should've Known Better features an intriguing vocal mix, while Sean's title track This Side, Chris's Green And Gray, and the exuberant Young presage emerging songwriting gifts. Seven Wonders has an ethereal quality - thanks to Sara's haunting vocal and fiddle - which contracts beautifully with the vitality of Beauty And The Mess.
