SOME of York's most dramatic changes of the last 150 years can be seen in these photographs of Pavement and its historic buildings.

The street used to end to the east with the old George Hotel, which was demolished in the 50s to make way for Stonebow, and at the west end with a roundabout.

On the main picture, from Victorian times and looking down the street from outside All Saints' Church, the hotel can be seen behind St Crux's Church, now partially demolished.

On the left is a shop now replaced by a building society, and on the right the former York Herald office, which was demolished to make way for Piccadilly.

In the second picture, taken in the 1950s, demolition work is in progress on the site of the George Hotel.

JB Collinson & Sons can be seen inthe third picture, a well-known family grocers, looking quite modern next to Thomas Herbert's House.

Thomas Herbert, a Groom of the Bedchamber to Charles I, lived in the house in his later years.

York's traffic problems seem to be starting in the fourth picture, taken in 1957, at a time when Stonebow was open.

The last picture shows the old Pavement Vaults public house which was next door to The Fleece. The decorative front can still be seen today.
