A "HAIR-RAZING" stunt which could see a Guinness World Record smashed in York is still in need of willing volunteers.

More than 100 people have already volunteered for an attempt on the Guinness world record for the most heads shaved in four hours, which currently stands at 156 carried out by five hairdressers.

But 200 are needed to ensure that the record is well and truly broken during the fundraising event at the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, at Naburn, on January 19.

The event is inspired by Robert Owen, six, of Pocklington, who is currently being treated for leukaemia at St James's Hospital, Leeds. All money raised will be split between Candlelighters, the Yorkshire-based charity dedicated to supporting children with cancer, and the leukaemia charity, the Anthony Nolan Trust.

Robert's mother, Dianne, who is organising the attempt, said: "The basic Guinness records rule is that all heads should be full heads of hair, not balding or receding, and that the cut should be a grade 1 or 2.

"However, in order that as many people as possible can take part, we will have an additional group of hairdressers cutting the hair of the people who do not qualify.

"There will also be another person 'finishing off' anyone who wants to be completely bald."

Mrs Owen said everyone is welcome to take part, but children will need a letter of consent from a parent.

The event will take place on Sunday, January 19, from noon to 4pm. For more information or to volunteer, phone Dianne on 01759 303992.
