York City Knights were given a timely boost ahead of their TXU Energi Challenge Cup tie against Skirlaugh by the news stand-off Mark Cain could be fit to play.

It had looked as if the former Hull Kingston Rovers number six could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after initial reports suggested he had broken his hand in the historic first-ever Knights game against his former employers two days' ago.

However, it has now been revealed that the injury is not as bad as was first thought, with the 26-year-old just suffering bruising and swelling to the hand.

And with the club's physiotherpy staff working on the injury, Cain could retain his place for the tricky trip to the Boulevard to face National Conference side Skirlaugh this Sunday.

Chief executive Steve Ferres said: "It is not broken, it is just bruised and swollen, so we are quite hopeful Mark will be okay for the weekend."

Meanwhile, the Knights have received 'promising responses' from potential sponsors following Sunday's clash with Hull KR.

The Knights Supporters' Club are organising a bus to the historic TXU Energi Challenge Cup tie at the Boulevard.

The Knights face amateurs Skirlaugh in the third round, with the famous old ground - home to Hull FC until their recent move to the new Kingston Communications Stadium - being reopened especially for the clash.

The Supporters' Club bus will only run if there is sufficient demand. Anyone wishing to travel by coach should contact the club office (01904 656105) and leave their name, contact telephone number and location. All names to be left by Thursday night.

Further details of cost (which is hoped to be £5 each but depends on numbers), pick-up points and times will be confirmed on Saturday.

The Yorkshire Federation of Rugby League Supporters' Clubs is holding a roadshow at York City Knights' Huntington tonight, starting at 7.30pm.

A number of leading personalities will be present, including Knights' chief executive Steve Ferres, former player and president Denzil Webster, and several of the Knights' first team squad.

The local amateur game is also likely to be represented.

BBC Radio York sports presenter and RL commentator Sharon Shortle is to act as compere. Dress is smart casual. Entrance is free.

Further information is available from Federation PRO Phil Hodgson (tel 01977 515792).
