A VOLUNTEER led self-defence class set up only four months ago has already "graded" its first pupil.
The class, based at St Joseph's Church, at Clifton, York, is run by ex-RAF combat survival instructor and karate expert Paul D'Arcy.
Paul started the classes at home, then joined with voluntary group Community And Recreation Sport (CARS) to find a permanent home.
Pupils begin by being taught basic self-defence, and after only eight classes Clifton resident Lesley Smith has mastered six basic techniques.
She will now go on to study for the intermediate level.
Paul said: "Lesley has done brilliantly, a very quick learner, we are all really pleased for her.
"Anyone from the age of five upwards is welcome to come to the classes so pop in or give me a ring to find out what we are all about."
The classes are held on Monday nights at the church hall, in Sutton Way. The juniors class (age up to 14) is held between 6pm and 7pm, seniors from 7pm to 8pm. Take jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt. For more details phone Paul on 07930 376979.
