A NORTH Yorkshire forest is hoping to get by with a little help from its friends with the launch of a new community group.

The Forestry Commission has teamed up with the newly-created Friends of Dalby Forest, a group of local people keen to make a contribution to the 8,600-acre beauty spot.

Friends chairman Graham Dixon said: "This is a real opportunity for the users of the forest to enhance the quality of this wonderful natural resource and we welcome ideas for future projects and activities.

"We are very enthusiastic and committed to making a real contribution to the development of Dalby Forest as a unique woodland and recreational resource."

Subscription to the group is £5, entitling members to discount at the visitor centre, newsletters and a magazine.

The Forestry Commission has also promised 25 per cent of all cash raised through the £20 forest drive season ticket to the group.

Andrew Smith, forest district manager, said: "Many people have expressed a wish to get involved in the running of the forest and after organising meetings last year it was clear there was plenty of enthusiasm for a friends organisation.

"The group will help us take forward many ambitious plans and support conservation initiatives.

"They will also offer us feedback to make sure we get things right first time. It's an exciting venture and by far the biggest of its kind in Northern England."
