A NEW centre to give young people a fresh start has opened in York.

The Choices centre, run by charity Rathbone, was opened on Thursday at Northfield School at Acomb.

Centre leader Teresa Halder said: "It is an excellent opportunity for young people for whom school has not worked for whatever reason to be given a new start and try to gain qualifications."

The centre, in the grounds of the school in Beckfield Lane, aims to create a positive environment for young people aged 13 to 16 who have had difficulties with their education, to stop young people being permanently excluded from school, and to help those who are excluded find a new way forward.

The scheme offers programmes to help young people develop skills and confidence, including work placements giving students a chance to prepare for their future.
