WORK has begun to return a Scarborough beauty spot to its former glory with a £100,000 facelift by engineers.

The programme to repair damaged cliffs in the Spa Gardens below the Esplanade is expected to take five weeks.

The work includes the repair and strengthening of retaining walls and the installation of ground anchors to improve the stability of the upper section of the garden area.

Coun Godfrey Allanson said: "This will greatly improve a very popular beauty spot in Scarborough.

"The council has had to deal with a substantial number of areas like this, where the heavy rainfall we have suffered in recent years has caused structural problems."

Scarborough Borough Council has spent more than £500,000 in recent years repairing the cliffs in the North and South bays.

Coun Allanson said: "Once this work is complete the Spa Gardens will be back to their best and will once again be a fine place to walk and visit."
