A MOVING exhibition of work created by women and children who have experienced domestic violence has opened in York.

The Heart to Heart exhibition at York City Art Gallery features the artwork of eight women and the letters of children.

The display is a joint initiative between the NSPCC, York City Art Gallery and York East Arts, and runs until March 7.

Marcia Mackey, NSPCC project worker, said: "The artwork expresses their emotions about the violence they have experienced as well as celebrating the women's drive to end the violence and their determination to move on in their lives and their relationships."

The contributors have all taken part in groups run by York Domestic Violence Prevention Service.

Painting workshops were run over 18 months and led by artist Lesley Seeger at the NSPCC offices in York.

Marcia said the workshops gave women and children a safe place to discuss their experiences and they wanted to put their work on show to reach out."

The exhibition was launched to coincide with a season of programmes on the BBC called Hitting Home, which explore the subject of domestic violence.
