WITNESSES are being sought by police after the mother of a three-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a lorry in Goole.

Humberside Police said 30-year-old single mother Jacqueline Wareing, who lived in the Old Goole area, was found lying dead in the road in South Street, Goole, by a resident who alerted them at about 12.30am on Saturday. She had been involved in a collision with an articulated lorry.

Police have been making inquiries into her death since the early hours of Saturday, but are now appealing to the public for help.

Detectives want to speak to anyone who saw a red articulated Scania lorry with a red, curtain-sided trailer with the words McCann on the side in white letters, in the South Street area.

The lorry is thought to have been parked a short distance from the Middle House pub, on the opposite side of the road, and is believed to have left South Street some time between 11.30pm on Friday and midnight on Saturday.

Detective Superintendent Colin Andrews said: "We need to hear from any member of the public with information about this incident. Anyone who saw the lorry in South Street or driving round the Goole and Pollington area after 11.30pm on Friday must get in touch with police immediately."

Anyone who saw the lorry should call police at Goole on 01405 721013.

Police said Ms Wareing's daughter was being cared for by a local family.

A 31-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the incident. He was yesterday released on police bail pending further inquiries and is due to report back to Goole police station in 12 weeks' time.
