CONGRATULATIONS to Ronald Milner, 100 years old today. The centenarian ascribes his longevity in part to his nightly tot of whisky.

That is a fine example that many would wish to follow. But it is becoming harder all the time. Those who prefer an old fashioned place to drink and socialise, as opposed to the new brand of brash, loud bars, are losing out.

The latest evidence of this is the plan to turn York's INL Club into flats.

Perhaps city drinkers might consider an occasional hike to Selby for their medicinal drop. The walk may do them almost as much good as the whisky.
