A MACHETE-WIELDING thug robbed a female student in a York street.

The student, believed to attend York St John College, was walking along Del Pyke, in The Groves, when she was approached by a man.

Police said the man then produced a machete-like knife with a foot long "bright silver" blade, threatened the student and stole her flute.

She was left unhurt, but very shaken.

It was the second robbery in The Groves in a week, but police said they were not linking the two attacks.

Sergeant Colin Ventress said today: "Obviously this was a frightening and worrying incident. We would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything in the Del Pyke area to get in touch.

"We would remind people to be vigilant when walking through The Groves, and advise them to try to walk in groups if possible."

A York St John College spokeswoman said students and staff had been advised to avoid The Groves area if possible.

The spokeswoman added: "We will be in discussion with police officers about the need for improved security in the streets in the locality to ensure that our students and staff are as safe as possible."

The robber was white, about 5ft 5in, with mousy, curly hair, pointed features and a pitted complexion. He was wearing a dark puffa jacket.

The flute was a Trevor James, type 31VC-E-A, serial number M2275. It was in a black leather box.

The robbery took place at about 9.15 last night. Anyone with information is asked to phone the police on 01904 631321.
