FINDING ourselves in Pocklington for the second time in as many months we went in search of refreshment.

We were in a dilemma. Did we just have coffee and risk spoiling lunch or should we have an exceptionally early lunch? We chose the latter option.

This corner venue was bright and sunny. There were no other customers when we entered but our solitude did not last long. When asked what we would like to eat we had to admit having been diverted by the attractive tablemats emblazoned with little pigs, each individually named!

But to business. Ann has developed a liking for tortilla wraps and seeing them on the menu asked about the fillings. Too bad! Tortillas were no longer provided despite being on the menu.

The alternative jacket potato with bacon and beans proved to be far from second best.

Ann was delighted with this dish, including the garnish, which left her well satisfied but with just enough room to raid my plate for chips.

My choice was scrambled egg, with bacon and chips, plus two slices of buttered toast. Although the egg was stiffer than I prefer everything had been freshly cooked and was piping hot. I was grateful for the cups of tea we had to help the meal go down.

The quality was excellent and very reasonably priced at £6.10.

Clearly this was a popular spot for locals, many of whom were greeted by name.

Prices were reasonable: filter coffee cost 95p, all-day breakfast at £3.25, or £3.75 with chips, plated salads were £3.25, beans on toast £1.40. Scones and fresh cakes were also on the menu. A cream tea was only £1.50.

The caf is entirely non-smoking and with two hours' free parking in the town, it is not too far to divert from the main York to Hull road to pay a visit.
