A RECENT visit to the Shambles car park revealed parking charges are to increase by more than 18 per cent from April 1.

This means our usual visit to the city centre shops lasting not more than three hours will now cost £3.90. What possible justification is there for such a staggering increase?

It can only be assumed this is yet another example of our anti-motoring city council: and no doubt our anti-car councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing will shortly be gracing the pages of the Evening Press to confirm yet another victory against drivers.

Who needs congestion charging with a council such as ours?

...FOR anyone seeking free parking in York the ideal spot is outside the Westgate flats in Leeman Road.

It seems residents, contractors and visitors to the flats are hell-bent on parking on the pavement without any thought for pedestrians or those pushing prams and wheelchairs.

Only last week a woman pushing a wheelchair had to go on to the road to manoeuvre around a lorry parked across the "tactile area".

I may have missed the notices for parking vehicles in this area or marked-out car park spaces, but I have checked with a work colleague who assures me there are no signs or white, oblong-shaped parking lines.

City of York Council could boost its parking fine coffers by getting a couple of traffic wardens down to Westgate flats on a daily basis.

That way they will make enough money to open another Park and Ride centre.

Anthea Drive,

Huntington,
