PEOPLE in Boroughbridge are being consulted on a proposed traffic-calming scheme at an accident blackspot.

North Yorkshire County Council wants to take action because people have been hurt in six accidents in Wetherby Road, between the Minskip Road roundabout and Roecliffe Lane, in the last five years.

The county council has two options aimed at reducing traffic speeds.

The first includes retaining the existing central hatching and right turn lanes, extending this provision along the road by providing further right-turn lanes.

It also suggests creating a formalised parking area outside the local car salesroom for evening use.

Option two includes removing the central hatching and right turn lanes to provide a single carriageway with centre line. The vehicle lanes would be narrowed by the provision of cycle lanes next to the kerb lines to provide an option which is in keeping with the county council's local transport plan objectives to encourage safer cycling.

Details of the proposals have been sent to residents and traders in the area.

A questionnaire and details of the scheme are available in the library and information centre in Boroughbridge.

People wishing to comment on the scheme should fill out the questionnaire and return it to the Director of Environmental Services, County Hall, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, by Monday, April 28.
