TELEVISION personality Selina Scott has claimed lights outside a North Yorkshire pub are keeping her awake at night.

Selina, who is a frequent visitor to her parents' home in Appleton-le-Moors, says she cannot sleep at night because of brightness from the lights at The Moors pub. She said the lights, which include floodlights and adverts on the door, were installed a year ago without permission and replaced a single lantern. She claims they are left on late at night and she is the only one in the village to be affected by them.

She said: "None of the parish councillors live near the site and, not surprisingly, had no objections."

She said the lights contravened park policy.

"Strong action should be taken to remove them," she added.

"This is a medieval village. Unlike others, there was no light pollution until now".

Planning officers have recommended that the North York Moors Park Authority refuse planning permission.

The park planning committee is divided on the issue and has deferred a decision for officers to explore the possibility of a more acceptable scheme being put forward. Planning officer Mark Southerton said: "The lighting units are in an obtrusive position on the front elevation of building and detract from its character and appearance."
