THIS is what the promotional poster for the York International Nines RL Tournament will look like, following the competition run in York primary schools.

As reported by the Evening Press, the competition saw school pupils invited to design and send in their posters, with a theme of historic York coupled with rugby league.

The five best entries won £300 worth of computer software donated by PC World at Monks Cross for their school, while the winning entry is also to be professionally drawn up and used as the official York International Nines 2003 poster.

About 15 entries were displayed in York City centre with the poster by Kayleigh Stubbs, of Woodthorpe Primary School, coming out on top.

The judging panel comprised York City Knights winger Alex Godfrey, Evening Press rugby league writer Peter Martini, York Nines mastermind Lionel Hurst, former Bradford Bulls chief executive Abi Ekoku, City of York Council events officer Liz Topi and Gordon Stowell, business manager at PC World Monks Cross.

The four other top entries were by Samantha Hamstead, of St Aelred's PS, which was Alex Godfrey's favourite; Katie Jackson, of Huntington PS; Thomas Atkin, of Tang Hall PS; and Kellie Rispin, of Cannon Lee PS. Bei Zhang, of Woodthorpe PS, whose poster was favoured by Peter Martini, just missed out.

Gordon Stowell said: "The quality of the posters was outstanding and the artwork and the design were excellent. The winner brought out historic York and links to the rugby. It was sold to me as soon as I saw it."

Alex Godfrey said: "The artwork was very good and there were some really good ideas. It's good to see schools and youngsters getting involved."
