POPULAR York artist Alan Stuttle is closing the doors on his gallery for the last time today after 33 years.

The 64-year-old was inspired by the adventurous spirit of his murdered daughter, Caroline, to sell the premises in Micklegate and use the proceeds to travel the world.

Alan, who has painted hundreds of images of York over the years, first came to the city in 1970 and lived above the premises which was then a pet shop.

When the former owners, Mr and Mrs Davies, retired they offered the shop to Alan rent free so he could open a gallery. It was then left to him when they died.

"They were wonderful people and helped me realise my dream of opening a gallery," he said.

"We've been exceptionally busy over the years and I've met some wonderful people."

The artist now plans to paint the seven wonders of the world before returning to set up a trust fund which will provide financial support for other teenagers wanting to travel.

His daughter Caroline, 19, a former York College student, was murdered 12 months ago while on a gap year backpacking trip in Australia.

Ian Douglas Previte, a 30-year-old Australian, has been charged with Caroline's murder following a painstaking inquiry by Queensland detectives, which included mass DNA testing. His committal hearing is on Tuesday.

"It's a new beginning for me," Alan said. "It has been a wonderful adventure. I'm sad but it's necessary after everything that has happened to me and my wife Marjorie."

The premises is now set to be turned into a hairstylists' and beauticians' salon. Any customers who have ordered paintings from the gallery can still pick them from the shop next week.

Alan says he will today enjoy a farewell cup of tea with his staff, some of whom have been with him for 30 years.
