FOLK family firm Waterson:Carthy are to give a charity concert in aid of the Cookridge Cancer Centre, Leeds, at the Shire Hall, Howden, East Yorkshire, on June 1.

The support act will be Soundsphere, a York group of a cappella singers.

The Cookridge hospital is the regional cancer treatment centre for Yorkshire and more than 300 patients a day travel from all over the county for radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

All proceeds from next month's event will go towards Cookridge Cancer Centre's yearly target of £200,000-plus to buy medical equipment and, where possible, home comforts for all those referred to Cookridge for treatment.

The Waterson:Carthy concert is being put on by Mark Rodger and Wishful Thinking Volunteers, who are raising funds for Cookridge for the fourth year running. Tickets are available at £12 from Touchwood in Howden and Arthur Reads Jewellers in Goole or by ringing Mark Rodger on 01430 431512.

The Shire Hall, Howden, has established itself as an outlet for jazz seasons over the past couple of years, organised by Howdenshire Live Arts.
