YORK kids are gearing up for the North Yorkshire Youth Games on Sunday.

The Games are the biggest youth sport event held anywhere in the county and involve around 1,200 youngsters taking part.

Among the sports youngsters will be tackling are athletics, basketball, rugby union, rugby league, football, orienteering, netball, hockey, sportsability, tennis and table tennis.

Events will be held at Scarborough Sports Centre, Scarborough College, Pindar Leisure Centre and the Graham Table Tennis Centre. The Games will start at 10.30am at each venue with the closing ceremony and awards presentation at Scarborough College at 3.30pm.

As well as the main events there will also be demonstration sports, including baseball and golf, and fun activities, including face painting and bungee runs.

St Oswald's will now represent York in the mixed rugby event after beating Ralph Butterfield 24-20 in the final of the York Schools Tag Rugby tournament.

Twenty schools took part in the finals at Oaklands while 1,400 children received rugby coaching in schools over several weeks as a build up to the York finals.
