THERE was a fatal accident recently on the A19 just north of the Tollerton/Huby crossroads.

As someone who drives along this road three times a week on average, I am surprised there isn't a similar incident every day.

On virtually every trip on that stretch of the A19 between Shipton and Easingwold, I am aggressively tailgated by people who believe the 60mph speed limit does not apply to them.

They then overtake on the approach to a blind bend or summit, and usually get away with it - by the grace of God.

The culprits tend to be middle-aged executives in Vauxhall Cavaliers, BMWs and young women in Renault Clios, with one hand on the steering wheel and the other clamping a mobile phone to their ears.

I suggest speed cameras be installed on the A19 between Shipton and Easingwold.

It should be made a criminal offence, punishable in a similar way to drink-driving, for a mobile to be switched on inside a vehicle while its engine is running.
