Don't get taken for a ride when buying or selling a car.

City of York Council's Trading Standards looks at what to consider if you are thinking of buying or selling your car.

When is the best time to buy and sell?

- If you are selling, usually spring or summer

- If you are buying, late autumn, prices often fall as winter approaches and buyers become scarce.

What about buying a new car?

- There are now two months of the year for new registrations, September and March, and most dealers have sales targets to reach. If things have been slow try negotiating for a new car in the last week of those months - you may get a better deal. Alternatively, if you are not bothered about the latest registration you may find better deals in August and February.

Considering a second-hand car?

- Before beginning your search check out used car prices. There are a number of price guides around you can buy or use over the internet

- Remember, when buying from a private individual you'll have virtually no redress if the car is a dud. Get the car checked out by an independent expert motor examiner. The AA or RAC offer inspection services. It will be cheaper than paying for a car that is worthless or, even worse, dangerous

- If you buy from a dealer, look for those who offer manufacturers' used car quality assurance guarantees, or have the car examined.

How can I make sure the car isn't stolen or an insurance write-off?

- Do an HPI check, especially if it is a private sale. Most dealers do this check so ask to see their records. HPI checks will show whether a car has been reported stolen, a write-off or one with a hire purchase debt outstanding.

Is there anything else I should know?

- Check that the vehicle registration document ties up with the name and address of the person you are buying from

- Beware of traders posing as private sellers. Tell-tale signs include cars not being registered to the seller, they've only had the car a short time, no vehicle registration document, or they will only take cash rather than a bank draft

- Shop around for finance deals - compare APRs (true rate of charge for credit)

- Go car-hunting during daylight hours and test drive so you can see and hear what you are getting

- Always check the car and seller out, never buy on spec, or in a lay by, it could be an expensive mistake

- Never accept a personal cheque, insist on a bank or building society cheque.
