FOUR women were injured in a three-vehicle smash that caused long tailbacks in rush-hour traffic on the A1237.

Firefighters cut two women from a dark-coloured Ford Fiesta after a collision between the Fiesta, a red Peugeot 307 and a lorry at the Moor Lane junction of the A1237, near York, at 4.30pm yesterday.

Sergeant Colin Ventress, of York Police, said it was believed that a vehicle pulling out of the Moor Lane junction collided with another vehicle on the A1237, heading towards Leeds. A third vehicle, also travelling towards Leeds, then collided with the other two vehicles.

Fire crews from York, Acomb and Tadcaster attended the scene, with cutting equipment.

All four casualties were taken by ambulance to York District Hospital, suffering from neck and back pain, cuts and bruises.

A spokeswoman for York District Hospital said two of the women were admitted and two were later discharged.

Today the condition of those admitted was said to be comfortable.

A police spokesman said the road was closed for an hour-and-a-half in the wake of the accident.
