MOVE over Victor Meldrew, here comes another grump, one Albert Nobbs. Hull Truck Theatre Company presents Gordon Steel's bittersweet tale of love, loneliness and gentle humour, Albert Nobbs, on tour at Harrogate Theatre next week.

From the writer-director of Studs, A Pair Of Beauties, Like A Virgin and Dead Fish comes the domestic drama of the Nobbs household, a place where retirement will not mean peaceful, sun-kissed days spent pottering in the garden. When Albert retires, all hell breaks loose: he is bored and frustrated; his cholesterol levels are sky high; angina has kicked in; and his wife is nagging him senseless.

However, his uneventful, everyday life is turned upside down by Connie's death. Her interfering ways continue from beyond the grave as she reappears, seeking to match-make her forlorn Albert with her best friend, Rose.

Steel's study of old age and coping with death - recurring themes in his work - can be seen at Harrogate Theatre from June 12 to 14 at 7.45pm, plus 2.30pm on the last day. Tickets cost £5.50 to £13 on 01423 502116.

After Harrogate, this world premiere will play Hull Truck Theatre, Hull, from June 30 to July 12 at 8pm nightly. Tickets: £4.50 to £11.95; ring 01482 323638.
