FLYING winger Alex Godfrey is aiming to storm up the club's try-scoring charts - if he can stay fit.

At the start of the season, Godfrey threw down the gauntlet to his team-mates by predicting he would top the try-scoring table come the end of the campaign.

A hernia problem has hampered his bid so far, but he reckons he has what it takes to claw his way back into the frame if he can play regularly.

"If I play the rest of the games this season, I will stand by that boast of being the top scorer," he told the Evening Press.

"There's a few to catch up but my tries to games ratio isn't bad and I think I can do it."

He added: "Talking about being the top try-scorer is something we have a laugh about, but we all know you can't score tries without the help of your team-mates and it is more important that the team scores rather than the individual."

As reported by the Evening Press, Godfrey has been suffering with a hernia problem all season but has decided to delay surgery, and he marked his return from a two-month absence with a fine try in the 40-2 demolition of Swinton on Sunday. It was his third touchdown of the season in his eighth game.

"I came through the match okay and I reckon I'll be okay to play in the next match (at Hunslet on Sunday, June 15) if selected," he said.

"I enjoyed it and it was brilliant to get on the scoresheet."

The 24-year-old former Hull KR star lauded his team-mates for the way they have turned things round following the disappointing start to the National League Two campaign. They scored seven second-half tries against Swinton to follow up last week's win at Barrow.

"The first half against Swinton was a bit boring in comparison to the second but that set the platform for us to play the way we did in the second half," he said.

"They (Swinton) tired themselves out. They are a good side but we were a bit better and hopefully this result shows we are now on our way.

"It was taking time to gel but the lads are getting closer and it was just a matter of time.

"We've had a psychologist in over this last month and that has made a big difference too."

Godfrey also had a special word of praise for Neil Law, who played inside him at centre.

"He's a big guy and he draws players to him and that allows me to get on his shoulder," enthused the Knights' winger.

"He knows the game and talks really well and it's great to play alongside him."
