MORE than two decades of commitment to transport in York saw the city council's former leader honoured at a prestigious ceremony.

Coun Dave Merrett, the Labour group leader, was recognised for his "lifetime contribution" at the National Transport Awards in London.

Coun Merrett, who before taking on the mantle of party and council leader was a former executive member for planning and transport, was recognised for the "work he's put in over the last 21 years to push forward sustainable transport policies for York".

He was given his award at a glittering ceremony at the Sheraton Park Hotel, in Piccadilly, London, on Thursday night.

Under his stewardship as executive member and council leader, Coun Merrett had helped steer policies encouraging increased use of the city's Park&Ride services, cycling and walking initiatives as well as the futuristic urban management control system.

Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing, Labour's spokeswoman for transport and planning, said this award was a vindication of Labour's wide-ranging transport policies in the city.

"We worked hard to tackle York's transport issues head-on," she said. "We wanted to make travel easier for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and passengers." On Coun Merrett's award, she paid tribute to him, saying: "I would also, on behalf of all, like to congratulate Coun Dave Merrett for receiving a special 'Lifetime Achievement Award' in respect of his work in the area of improving transport.

"I know that Dave is exceptionally proud of receiving this award for the great progress made in York.

"Many of his ideas have been copied in the rest of the country and the ideas and inspiration that he has shown have helped improve the city for all."
